POP3 vs IMAP

Our mail server supports two different access methods, POP3 and IMAP.

POP3 is the traditional post office protocol version 3. It is the recommended method for a person who works from a single office or a single portable computer. In this method, your email program takes responsibilty for storing and managing your Email messages.

IMAP is a newer protocol which is useful for people who work from various locations with more than one computer and/or portable device. With IMAP, the mail server takes responsibility for storing and managing your Email messages. This helps eliminate the problem of having mail duplicated in various computers.

To upgrade from POP3 to IMAP, change your Email program to specify an IMAP mail server. Our mail server will automatically detect your settings and cooperate with your Email program.

Caution: Changing Email program settings from POP3 to IMAP will probably result in losing mail from your Email program. Completely backup your Email program data, and copy messages in your InBox, OutBox, Drafts, Sent Mail, to backup mail folders before making this change.

Using a Domain Address as a Return Address

Corresponding changes in both your email program and our mail server are usually required to send and retrieve from an Email address at your domain. We recommend that you set up a separate personality or account so that your Email program can check the mailbox at your local ISP as well as your mailbox at WebValence.

ISP Challenges

The following ISP's present special challenges.

America On Line

AOL mail software is proprietary and cannot be used with any other ISP.

Good news! You can use your AOL Internet connection to retrieve your mail directly from WebValence with any of the popular Email programs. This avoids the incompatibility issue with AOL and allows you to use your own domain name in your return address.

To use a mail program directly with AOL, launch AOL and login. Then minimize the AOL program. Launch an your Email program, such as Eudora, Outlook, Apple Mail, Entourage, or Thunderbird and begin accessing your mail from your WebValence domain.

Consult the Setup Guide above for guidelines on how to setup the mail program you have chosen.

EarthLink and Others (who block mail traffic on port 25)

Earthlink and most other large ISPs block outgoing mail traffic on port 25. The result is that you can't use any other mail server to send your mail. According to these ISPs, this is a spam prevention measure.

Our mail server also listens on a another port, so you can work around the ISP block on port 25. Please see the email program guide for more information on setting up this work around.

Checking Email Both at Your Domain and Your Local ISP

Most Email programs allow you to check several mail boxes. Setup the program according to the users guide for all the post office boxes that you want to check.

Ensuring that Your Email Account is Working
