Web Site Memberships

Home Services Web Sites Memberships

Definition

In general, owners may increase the perceived value of their site by offering something special to members or clients.

A member's area is a restricted area that is accessible only to those who have "signed up" to become members. Clients, customers, and others who haven't also explicitly "signed up" might also be offered access as a courtesy.

Applications

Members Areas can be a valuable addition to your web site. Here is a short list of possible applications:
  1. Coaches provide a "Client Area" where forms, resources, and tips are kept.
  2. Writers provide material which can be used by others for a fee.
  3. Trainers provide material, potentially including multimedia materials for their students.
  4. Merchants provide a buyer's club to their customers.
  5. A creative team uses the members area to collaboratively prepare and share concepts and materials.

Considerations

Keep in mind that member areas can be conceived in many different ways.
  • Members areas may be free or may involve a one-time or periodic fee.
  • Members areas might be enhanced by a discussion forum wherein the community shares information.
  • Members areas may involve a Email list for announcements and reminders.

Options

WebValence attempts to provide several options which can be used alone or in combination to create member's areas of varying forms.

Caution: some of these options use software technologies that are not familiar to the average web site designer, and will therefore not be within their comfort zone. With these systems, you will probably need to rely more on WebValence expertise to assist you in integrating your working web site.

Password Protected Realm

A single folder on your web site is designated as a member's area. A user name and password is required to access any resources inside this member's area folder. The user name and password are the same for everyone. The site owner can distribute the user name and password via email or in some other manner.

Individual Time-Limited Memberships

A single folder on your web site is designated as a member's area. Members sign up via a form on your web site and are given an individual user name and password. The form may require a payment or not, and the payment may be one-time or periodic. Access to the member's area is controlled by a login page.

This type of membership requires scripting, available from third parties or implemented by WebValence.

Browser-Updated Web Site

This type of web site is served by a special server that allows the owner to update and add to the web site from a browser interface. This offers unparalled ease of maintenance. No special software or tools are required. Built-in features in this technology includes:
  • Blogging page (the daily diary of web sites)
  • Membership area
  • Discussion board
  • Email bulletins

Various pages on your web site are designated as part of the member's area. Members sign up via a form on your web site and are given an individual user name and password. Access to the member's area is controlled by a login page.

Web Community Bulletin Board

This type of web site is served by a special server that is oriented towards getting people to communicate with each other with a focus on various discussion topics. It includes web oriented bulletin board and chat, together with email discussion.
